Community collaboration is a feature of what’s happening at Footscray Community Arts Centre in June.
After months of consultation, collaboration and creation, all our hard work on The Gift of Light project is set to be unveiled at Federation Square this month. We’ll be lighting up the city and warming up the chilly winter nights with incredible light-inspired artworks. And for the shy budding artists who haven’t yet been able to commit to taking on a workshop class, we have a reminder of how easy it is to give art a go!
Lighting Up Fed Square with The Gift of Light
The Gift of Light, as part of The Light in Winter festival at Federation Square, is set to open on Saturday 20 June at 5pm. This illuminating FREE cultural event is the result of months of collaboration between Footscray Arts and Federation Square, leading Melbourne artists and 13 diverse communities, who have all been working together to create artworks exploring the meaning of light and celebrating its importance in different cultures.
Join us for the spectacular unveiling of this event from 5pm – 7pm on Saturday 20 June and see Federation Square transformed with community-inspired light installations and performances from around the world.

Get Arty with no strings attached
Our Workshops term may have started but you can still dip your toes in the creative waters of our Winter Workshops Program and turn up casually for a range of workshops – without committing to a full term of classes.
With the introduction of our $15 casual workshops for Creative Kids and Adults you can now simply give a class a try whenever you feel like it. Shake your groove thing, give drawing a go or sharpen up your vocal chords. Kids can try stencil art, hip-hop dance or circus with NICA experts. And for the bubs we offer casual Music for Toddlers classes.
Visit our website for full details of what workshops are on offer. And who knows, you may even be inspired to commit to a full workshop term when the next round of classes start in July!
Out and About with The Hackkets
Our very own musical sensations The Hackkets are at it again, headlining this month at two of their favourite clubs.
On Saturday June 6 from 7pm see the gang, including vocalist DJ Victory spinning some of her favourite tunes, at the Y Dance Party, Footscray YMCA. Then on Friday 19 June The Hackkets will be rocking out at Club Wild, Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall. Club Wild is a widely popular discrimination-free event for people with disabilities to entertain and be entertained, and there is no disputing that The Hackkets are up for the task. These two gigs are a must for people looking to have a great time with like-minded others.

Polytoxic Workshop
Together with our good friends at Arts House and Kultour, we played host to the artists from Brisbane’s dance theatre company Polytoxic in mid-May. Thanks to amazing support from community leaders Grace Vanilau and Emeretta Cross, 15 young people from the Islander communities of the west were able to spend time with Polytoxic’s Efes and Lisa, for a unique professional development opportunity. The participants had a great time working with and learning from our guest artists, who were in Melbourne to perform their show Teuila Postcards.
Of course you can’t have a gathering for the Islander communities without food. And so, in true Polynesian style, Grace and Emeretta cooked up a feast for all participants and artists to share. It was a fantastic workshop and celebration that was enjoyed by all.
Visit our website for more details and photos from the day.
Arts Envoys
The 2009 Arts Envoys program is in full swing with eight participants having been chosen to take part in a hands-on traineeship in producing this year.
We’re excited to announce that our Arts Envoys will be working on a very special project to feature at this year’s Big West Festival. We’ve invited our talented team to curate a suite of shipping containers to be filled with interesting ‘happenings’ during the festival. It’s all under construction so stay tuned to see how our Arts Envoys dream up a big hit for Big West.

Representing Locals with a Disability
Nikki Zerella, Producer, Access Programs here at Footscray Arts, has recently taken up a position as a representative on Maribyrnong City Council’s Disability Advisory Committee (DAC).
The DAC advises Council on issues affecting people with a disability and their carers, allowing Council to ensure the City of Maribyrnong remains accessible and inclusive. The DAC also participates in a number of awareness programs and activities throughout the year.
